San Diego Zoo Hours and the Best Time to Visit
San Diego Zoo opening hours for 2026 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day we checked), Panda Ridge timing, the quietest days and months, and how long a visit takes.
The short answer: the San Diego Zoo opens at 9 a.m. every day of the year, and closing time moves with the season. When we checked on 21 October 2026 the zoo listed 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for that day, with longer evenings during summer and holiday events. The zoo publishes the hours for each date on its calendar, so check the day you plan to go.
Opening hours through the year
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Most of the year | Opens 9 a.m., closes late afternoon or early evening (6 p.m. on the day we checked) |
| Summer | Later closing times on many days |
| October weekends | HalGLOWeen evening activities on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October 31 |
| Late December | Jungle Bells holiday lights in the evening, on dates the zoo announces each year |
| Panda Ridge | Opens later than the front gate (10:30 a.m. in winter, per the zoo’s panda FAQ) |
Checked in October 2026 against the zoo’s plan-your-visit and panda pages.
What time should you arrive?
Get there at opening, or within the first hour. Mornings are cooler on the zoo’s hills, many animals are more active before the midday heat, and the parking lot is still emptying into the turnstiles rather than circling for spaces. If you have a ticket on your phone, you can walk straight to the entrance instead of queueing at the booth.

The pandas are the one exception to “do the big things first”. Panda Ridge opens later than the zoo, and you get a free same-day timed ticket by scanning the QR code on signs around the grounds. Pick a time as soon as you arrive, then spend the morning on the rest of the zoo. There is more detail in our giant panda guide.
The quietest days and months
The zoo does not publish attendance figures, so there is no official “slowest day”. In practice:
- Weekdays beat weekends, and Tuesday to Thursday outside school holidays are usually the calmest.
- School holidays and summer are the busiest, along with long weekends.
- Late January to early March, and September to mid-November (outside holidays) tend to be quieter, with mild weather.
- October is busy on weekends because children 11 and under get in free all month.
How long do you need?
Plan on at least four hours, and a full day if you can. The zoo covers about 100 acres of canyon and hillside, and the paths are steep in places. Three hours is enough for the highlights if you use the guided bus tour to get your bearings and the Skyfari to skip the steepest climb, but you will leave things out. Both rides are included with admission, subject to availability.
Book the day
Once you know your day, the zoo’s own 1-Day Pass is the ticket to buy: $78 per adult, valid for a year, and on GetYourGuide you can cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund. (Price checked in October 2026.)
Good to know before you go
- Food and water. You can bring water bottles, non-alcoholic drinks and your own food in small containers. Large coolers, glass, alcohol and balloons are not allowed.
- Strollers and wheelchairs. Strollers rent for $16 (single) or $20 (double) near the entrance, and wheelchairs and ECVs are available too, first come, first served.
- Parking. The lot costs $16 per car per day. Our parking guide covers paying, the shuttle and transit.
- Prices. What the different tickets cost, and the discounts that exist, are in our ticket price guide.
